EXCURSION PROGRAM

 

The ASMOSIA XI Conference will organize a one-day post conference excursion on May 23rd 2015 to the island of Brač, famous for good quality limestone used from antiquity to nowadays. The trip to Brač costs 30 €. 

 

Excursion Itinerary

 

  • Roman limestone quarry Rasohe near Spliska

The stone from Rasohe quarry was used in the construction of Diocletian's Palace. In the same quarry there is a rustically carved relief of Hercules. In the Roman time Spliska was a port for stone blocks embarkation.

 

  • Museum of Brač in Škrip

Škrip is the oldest settlement on Brač. The remains of the Bronze Age ramparts are preserved inside the museum complex. The museum has an archaeological and ethnographic collection as well as a Roman mausoleum from the 3rd century in situ.

 

  • Pučišća

Pučišća is a Brač settlement best known for its stone production. The limestone quarry opened in renaissance period is still in function. In the High school for Stone Masons, students can learn about traditional methods of stone carving.
